Coronary Calcium Scoring

A CT calcium scoring scan is a specialized, non-invasive test that uses computed tomography (CT) to detect and measure calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. Calcium buildup is a sign of coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to heart attacks. The scan provides a “calcium score” that helps doctors assess a person’s risk of heart disease before symptoms appear. It is quick, painless, and does not require contrast dye. CT calcium scoring is especially useful for evaluating risk in people with intermediate risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or a family history of heart disease. Patient’s who have already had any form of coronary bypasses, stent placement, or grafting would not be ideal candidates.
