Low Dose Lung Screening
Introduction :
A CT low-dose lung screening scan is a specialized, non-invasive imaging test used to detect early signs of lung cancer, particularly in high-risk individuals, before symptoms develop. It uses a much lower amount of radiation compared to a standard chest CT scan—typically around 1.5 millisieverts (mSv) for low dose lung screening scan versus 7 mSv for a conventional chest CT scan.
Eligibility Criteria for Low Dose Lung Screening:
According to current guidelines, low dose lung screening is recommended for individuals who meet the following criteria:
- Age: 50 to 80 years old
- Smoking history: At least a 20 pack-year smoking history (e.g., 1 pack/day for 20 years or 2 packs/day for 10 years)
- Smoking status: Current smoker or has quit within the past 15 years
- No current signs or symptoms of lung cancer
Low dose lung screening has been shown to reduce lung cancer deaths by detecting cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage.
